Car Wreck

It's gotten bad enough that I've started playing basketball at the health club just to get out and get some exercise. Interestingly enough playing basketball was how I got in shape enough to start running 5 and 10k's in the beginning. So now I'll play for an hour or 90 minutes and then sometimes hit the treadmill for 5 or so miles afterwards. Sometimes not.

I'm wondering where this slump is coming from. It could be mental but it sure feels physical. Just doesn't seem like I have it in me to run much of any distance at all. Overtrained? I don't know; doesn't seem like I would be given the mileage I was doing. It'll definitely make for an interesting marathon this weekend in Green Bay.

(Oooh, bunny outside the window right now. I'm vacillating between letting him sit there and be cute or scaring him to keep him from eating my wife's plants...)

Back to the marathon. I'll be taking it out slow and keeping it there that's for sure. Just trying to keep it under 4 hours so maybe in the 8:40's. Maybe 8:50's if need be. Walk the water stations to get enough fluid. Still kind of looking forward to it in a driving-by-a-car-wreck sort of way. How much can I make it hurt?

5/10/10 10 miles @ 8:38
5/11/10 5 miles @ 8:41

i was in a big funk all fall/winter. it seemed to match up with the overtraining "symptoms", except that i wasn't ever running a ridiculous amount of miles or killing myself with speedwork. i chose to blame it on my current living/working situation (long hours, away from home, lots of traveling on the weekends to go home, etc). to me all that stuff could wear me out mentally and affect my running, so i blamed it on that.

maybe all the marathoning was "too much". not mileage wise, but yet still physically and mentally.

whatever it is, just try to stay active... depending on your marathoning schedule, maybe you could give yourself a couple weeks "off" - either logging minimal mileage or actually taking time off and doing some XT instead.

hang in there!

I am no expert but it sounds like maybe you just need a break, a little cross training like basketball would probably be just the thing until you mentally "feel it" again.

Good luck. I am from WI - so at least the Marathon should be pretty. Have fun and take your time - i am sure the joy will come back to running.

I tend to think low motivation = over training, whether it's physical or mental. It sounds like you're listening to your body and mixing it up, so I bet you pull out of this soon.

Looking forward to hearing about the next marathon.

BTW...love the "squirrel!" moment you had:)

I was in a total funk all of Boston training, well after I got sick anyway, and I just couldn't pick it up and get going no matter what. I think honestly, we DO need these times, our bodies can't just keep being the energizer bunny, we need training cycles and downtime. Just have a great time in Green Bay, don't over-analyze it and enjoy every step. Then come back home and the drive to want it more will be there - trust me on that one. I never wanted so much to get back to intense training as I did post-Boston! Good Luck sunday!!!

I know this feelngall too well these days. I'm just about forcing myself out the door. Training is starting to be enjoyable again, but right now racing has absolutely no appeal.

Best of luck this weekend. Luckily you have enough fitness that you should be able to comfortably finish....

I am just coming off a car wreck as you call it. I just did other stuff, riding and swimming and that worked. Hope you kick this funk! Good luck with your race!

Seasonal? It seems like all of the commenters have been going through the same thing as you have...it's the spring into summer transition maybe? Or, perhaps, you just do too many marathons?!?!? Nah, that's your thing! You'll get though the slump, have a nice race!
